At last the PPSMI , the cosmetic policy of teaching Mathematics and Science in English which was introduced in 2003 , was terminated for good. But it only involves form 1 to form 5. Its implementation will be done in stages begining in 2012. The current batch of students under PPSMI will be phased out by 2014.
The PPSMI is highly fovoured by the urban elite and middle classes many of whom whose first langguage is English. But it victimises the rural and urban low income groups students whose command of the langguage is weak. The problem further comp0unded by the inability of the majority of the teachers involved who are not proficient enough in English.
After six years of implementation the policy can be regarded as a failure.The students performance in mathematics, science and english declines especially for rural students Survey by local university found that pupil's English proficiency is only improved by negligible 3%.
